Fast-track Consenting: Here to Stay (Online)

Fast-track consenting was introduced as an alternative to standard RMA approval processes. Its purpose was to accelerate the implementation of development projects to assist with economic recovery after Covid-19. Fast-track consenting has since been used successfully throughout New Zealand and over 75 projects have been approved. Applications for the fast-track consenting process were due to wind up by July 2023. However, the previous Labour Government and the current National-led Government have both recognised the benefits of the fast-track consenting process, and given it new life under new legislation. It seems that fast-track consenting is here to stay and further details on the new fast-track legislation are due to be released by 7 March 2024.

In this in-person and livestream event, you will hear from Judge Newhook, Environment Court Judge and Convenor of Expert Panels for fast-track consenting. You will also hear from Elliott Dennett, Team Leader of the Environmental Protection Authority’s fast-track consenting division. Both presenters will provide insights as to how fast-track consenting has been used successfully in the past, pitfalls to avoid, and look to the future role of this process.
